WARNING: USED TIRES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE….Mount New Tires on the Front or Rear?….and, What’s Up With Nitrogen?
Why are used tires too expensive? At Talley Trans (http://www.talleytransinc.com) a growing number of consumers are asking us for used tires.
Talley Trans will never sell them. They must be disposed of. The risks to you, your loved ones and your wallet are simply too expensive.
You may recall serious problems not so long ago with (1) Defective name-brand tires, blamed for some serious crashes, and (2) Aged, off-the shelf tires that should be disposed of rather than sold. Defects and age are multiplied with used tires, but it gets much worse. Even new or brand-name tires can be slight mismatches in size and/or shape and can contribute to serious axle, suspension and/or transmission damage. Imagine, you mounted 2 or more cheap used tires and a few months later you now need a transmission or an axle. Just as our bodies were never meant to run around on two different sizes of legs or feet, unbalances in your vehicle can contribute to premature wear and even destruction of the drive components associated with them. Thus, those used tires can easily cost you an axle or transmission or both. Too expensive! Moreover, your life is too precious to risk to a premature blow-out. Those who resell used tires rather than dispose of them properly can never insure proper inspection and quality control of what consumers may purchase. Imagine yourself buying a different left and right tennis shoe. Consumers can’t be certain of even getting 2 or more tires from the same car.
Besides proper inflation, mounting and balancing then, tires should always be replaced in pairs, and as my friend Louis Altazan, Agco Automotive, Baton Rouge, LA (agcoauto.com) points out, brand new tires should be mounted on the REAR of the vehicle, especially front-wheel drives. Nitrogen fill? While perhaps useful for airlines and racing, those conditions are far more extreme than normal driving and thus nitrogen-fill is an expense you don’t need. Finally, manufacturers routinely warn that safety spares should not be driven long or over a certain speed. Your safety is paramount, and again serious drivetrain damage is possible and quite expensive.
So, avoid the temptation to risk your life, and long-term sound vehicle health over used tires. They’re just too expensive.
As always your comments are welcome. Our observations are just that. Thank you for your thoughtful time and attention.
